Arsenal cult hero Wojciech Szczesny is part of a three-man shortlist to potentially replace Aaron Ramsdale, talkSPORT understands.

The 34-year-old was a huge fan favourite during his time at the Emirates after coming through the academy to become the club's number one.

A teammate of boss Mikel Arteta, the Poland international made 181 appearances for the Gunners after breaking into the team in the 2010/11 season.

After falling out of favour under Arsene Wenger which resulted in him being shipped off on a two-year loan spell to Roma, he joined Juventus in 2017.

But he could now be in line for a shock return to north London as Arsenal eye up a back-up goalkeeper should Ramsdale depart this summer.

The England shot-stopper is believed to be on Newcastle's radar with the 25-year-old looking for first team football next season.

Ramsdale has lost his place in the line-up to David Raya this campaign, with Arsenal expected to turn the Spaniard's loan deal into a permanent switch for £25million.

And this has seen Arsenal to search for a replacement - ideally a homegrown player to help them comply with Premier League rules.

With Szczesny a Hale End graduate, he fits the bill, though it remains to be seen whether he would be happy to be Raya's back-up with the player still Juve's first-choice option between the sticks.

Brighton's Jason Steele, who has rotated in goal with Bart Verbruggen this term, is also admired by Arsenal.

Steele also has previous experience of playing with Raya with the duo both at Blackburn together earlier in their career.

Anthony Patterson has also caught Arsenal's attention having impressed as Sunderland's No1 in the last two campaigns.

Piers Morgan promises to pay for a Tottenham bus parade and wear a Spurs shirt if they beat Manchester City and finish fourth to help Arsenal win the Premier League title

It is expected to be a busy summer at the Emirates, with a high-profile striker tipped to join.

And Arteta is also looking to bolster his midfield, with Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes linked with a stunning switch.
