Luton Town

Ex-Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest defender training with League One side

Greg Halford is training with Luton Town, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke on Twitter.

The 34-year-old is hoping to a earn a contract with the League One side. The Hatters are currently in the hunt for a new manager after Nathan Jones left them for Stoke City.

Halford is versatile and can slot in anywhere which would make him a useful acquisition for promotion chasing Luton.

He is vastly experienced in the Football League and has played over 500 games in his career, scoring 58 goals.

Halford has been in the hunt for a new club since his release by Cardiff City in the summer. He played 16 games in all competitions last season for the Bluebirds as they were promoted to the Premier League.

He spent time training with Championship side West Brom in early December but the Baggies decided against offering him a contract.

Halford started his career at Colchester United and went onto play 163 games for them before he was snapped up by Reading in 2006, but spent just a year at the Madejski Stadium as he made the move up north to Sunderland in 2007.

He struggled to nail down a regular starting place with the Black Cats and had loan spells at Charlton Athletic and Sheffield United prior to his move to Wolves in 2009. Spells at Portsmouth, Nottingham Forest, Brighton and Hove Albion have followed for Halford before his move to Rotherham United 2015.

Halford impressed for the Millers under Neil Warnock who brought him to Cardiff with him. Could he get back into the game now with Luton Town?
