Blackburn Rovers boss confirms talks with out of contract Championship man

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has confirmed that the club have held talks with out of contract Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing.

Stewart Downing is out of contract at Middlesbrough this summer and he will be leaving the club this summer, barring a late change of mind.

A number of clubs have been credited with interest in Downing this summer. The 34-year-old has been linked with Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, Scottish Premiership side Rangers and League One side Sunderland.

Mowbray has now confirmed that Blackburn Rovers have spoken to Downing recently, but said that he is “relaxed” about a possible deal.

“There’s no offer, there’s been conversations,” Mowbray told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“Stewart is an out of contact footballer. I’m relaxed and comfortable. If Stewart Downing wants to come to Blackburn Rovers then I think he’s a very talented footballer.

“If he wants to go to any of the other clubs that have been mentioned then that’s fine also, whether that’s to play more football or earn a few more quid. That would be no problem.”

He emerged through the youth academy with Middlesbrough and went on to become a fixture in their first-team during his first spell with the club. Downing made his debut for the club in April 2002 and in two separate spells with the club, he has played 399 games for Boro (Transfermarkt).

Downing left Boro upon their relegation to the Championship in 2009 to join Aston Villa, where he played 79 games over two years with the club. In 2013, he switched to Liverpool, playing 91 times, representing them in the Europa League as well, The winger also spent two years with West Ham United, before returning to Middlesbrough for a second stint with the club in 2015.
