Ex-England international weighs up Blackburn Rovers move amid Sunderland interest

Stewart Downing is weighing up a move to Blackburn Rovers.

The 34-year-old has held talks with the Lancashire side, as per a report by Teeside Live.

Downing, who has 35 caps for England, is out-of-contract at Middlesbrough in a couple of weeks time and is considering his options. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that he could also remain at the Riverside.

However, there is interest from Blackburn, who are managed by his former boss Tony Mowbray, as well as Sunderland. A move to the Stadium of Light could suit Downing as he would mean staying in the North-East. Rangers have also been linked.

Blackburn’s Mowbray has said: “I know him from my ties with Middlesbrough Football Club over a number of years and he has decisions to make,”

“He has options. My personality isn’t to beat him with a stick and say ‘if we don’t know by Friday then forget it you’re not coming”

“Footballers have to make the right decision and if they are to come to your football club they need to weigh things up, decide what’s right for them, feel the positives or negatives about what the managers have spoken about and then make the decisions.”

Downing is a vastly experienced player with over 650 appearances under his belt for the likes of Boro, West Ham United, Aston Villa and Liverpool so there is no wonder why he has plenty of options.
