Boro midfielder: ‘I’m playing the best football of my career’

Middlesbrough’s Paddy McNair says he’s playing the best football of his career at the Riverside.

The Northern Ireland midfielder joined Boro in 2018 from Sunderland after previously coming through Manchester United’s youth system.

Although the Teesside club has made a shaky start to the season under Jonathan Woodgate, McNair believes he is playing his best football for club and country as he aims to propel Boro out of trouble in the Championship and get Northern Ireland to Euro 2020.

Speaking to BBC Sport, McNair said: “I feel like I’m playing the best football I ever have done for club and country so if I can just keep going and playing well hopefully the goals will keep coming.”

McNair played the full 90 minutes as Michael O’Neill’s side held the Netherlands to a 0-0 draw at Windsor Park.

Had they won, they would have qualified automatically for the finals but now face Bosnia in a winner takes all play-off match.

McNair has been at Boro for almost 18 months after signing a four-year deal for £5m.

In that time, he has scored just two goals for the club and he hopes his more attacking performances for Northern Ireland can help him secure more goals for club and country.
